Bosch approved, standardized CDR Technician Certification Course
Tuition: $175 (USD)
Instructors: Various approved trainers, including W. R. "Rusty" Haight and Brad Muir

This course offers the collision investigator insight into the fundamental operational function of the Bosch Crash Data Retrieval (CDR) System. At the end of this course, the CDR Technician will be expected to be able to image and preserve data in a format such that the CDR Data Analyst would be able to use that collected data together with a situationally complete reconstruction.  The CDR Technician course replaces a portion of the previously offered "CDR Operator's Certification Course" and does not go into any analysis of the data extracted/harvested. This course is best suited for field investigators, insurance investigators and adjusters or those involved in vehicle documentation and inspection and is the basis for and a required prerequisite for the CDR Data Analyst's course.

Major course topics include:

The overall operation of the CDR System to include evaluation of the vehicle being examined for download and application of the software and hardware to that vehicle for GM, Ford and Chrysler vehicles

Functions of the CDR program (program navigation, sections, components, mechanics of the download)
DLC and direct-to-module connection methods from start-to-finish

Access considerations for the PCM, ACM and ROS
Troubleshooting and solving hardware and software issues when using the Bosch CDR System

Hands-on, in class downloads of Airbag Control Modules (ACM) and Powertrain Control Modules (PCM)

Ownership of the Bosch CDR System, although strongly encouraged, is not required and the design of this course is such that even those who have not yet obtained a system will better understand this evolving technology and benefit from the information.

Course completion meets the requirements for recognition as the Bosch CDR System Data Collection Technician.

This course is conducted over a full 8 hours over 1 day starting at 8am and ending as late as 5:00pm/17:00hrs. It will not "end early."  Please make your travel arrangements to allow for ample time to get to the airport and go through security after the completion of the course - the class does not normally end earlier than 4:30-5:00PM.

CDR Data Analyst Certification Course
Tuition: $450 (USD)
Instructors: "Rusty" Haight and Brad Muir

This course offers the collision reconstructionist who has completed the CDR Technician Course further insight into the function of the automobile Event Data Recorder (EDR) component, its history and evolution as well as interpretation skills enabling the application of a Bosch Crash Data Retrieval (CDR) System report to a situationally complete crash reconstruction.

Using traditional reconstruction techniques and typical admissibility hearing issues as the general basis for the course objectives, the CDR Data Analyst Certification course is both a natural extension of the CDR Technician training and an expansion of one's reconstruction skills. This course, together with the Technician course, replaces the previously offered "CDR Operator's Certification Course."
There is no hands on downloading activity in this class since it is assumed that those in attendance have recently completed the Technician course and understand that process along with the underlying concepts of data storage in the EDR component, CDR software troubleshooting and related error messages and their solution(s). For that reason, there is no need to bring a CDR System to this course. Activity in this course is focused on reading and understanding a CDR report then applying it to a normal situationally complete reconstruction.

Major course topics include:

General legal considerations (criminal and civil) related to CDR data admissibility

Types of data collected, generally for GM, Ford and Chrysler vehicles accessible using the most current version of the Bosch CDR System

Reading, interpreting and using the accessible GM, Ford and Chrysler vehicle CDR reports with a situationally complete collision reconstruction

Understanding, identifying and dealing with anomalous data from GM, Ford and Chrysler vehicle CDR reports

Ownership of the Bosch CDR System, although strongly encouraged, is not required and the design of this course is such that even those who have not yet obtained a system will better understand this evolving technology and benefit from the information assuming they have completed the Technician course.

Course completion - together with completion of the Technician course - meets the requirements for the Bosch approved CDR System Data Analyst individual certification.

This course is conducted over a full 32 hours over 4 days starting after 8am and ending at about 5:00PM/17:00hrs on the last day of the course.  Please make your travel arrangements to allow for ample time to get to the airport and go through security after the completion of the course on the last day.  Given the volume of material, this course does not usually end earlier than 4:30PM (1630hrs) on the last day and may run later depending on the course flow relative to the involvement and interest level of the students in attendance.

CDR Technician Course Train-the-Trainer Certification
Cost: $550 for a license to use the standardized, approved course materials for 2 years
Instructors: W. R. "Rusty" Haight, Brad Muir

This very specialized training course is open only to those who have completed the Collision Safety Institute CDR Operator's Certification Course series since January 2008.

This CDR Technician Course Train-the-Trainer Certification course is an opportunity for qualified and experienced CDR Data Analysts to train others to the Technician Level. This course provides qualified individuals with an opportunity to teach the one day CDR Technician Course; the prerequisite to the CDR Data Analyst's Certification Course. It does not qualify one to teach the CDR Data Analyst's Certification Course.

Those who successfully complete this course and provide personalization information will be provided with a training materials CD personalized for that individual to teach the Technician Level course. That material cannot be changed or used in conjunction with some other Crash Data related course offering and is licensed to the individual instructor only for the 2 year period.  This policy ensures that the Technician Level course material presented is the same each time it's offered. Periodic updates will be made available to registered trainers as the Trainer course and CDR program is updated during the term of the license.

During this course, prospective trainers are walked through the course material, slide-by-slide and the concepts and purpose of each topic is explained in detail so the prospective trainer can comfortably and professionally present that material on their own.  Attendance at the Train The Trainer course alone is no guarantee an individual will successfully be licensed to teach the material.  During this course, individual potential instructors are evaluated for their understanding of the material, ability to process and present the material and competence as an instructor in this specialized topic area.

Once an individual has successfully completed this course, to be issued a set of training materials, Technician level Trainers will be expected to:

Agree to use only the course material provided as part of this training during their presentations of the Technician class

Agree to not redistribute any part of the provided course presentation material and not subcontract another instructor to present this material for that individual certified trainer

Agree to have on hand during the course presentation a sufficient number of accessible Ford, GM and Chrysler modules - each with stored data - to facilitate in-class download exercises for class sizes up to 30 students, and own a current Bosch CDR System which the certified trainer would use during the presentation of the Technician level class.

Advanced skills for the CDR Data Technician
Tuition: $575 (USD)
Instructor: Brad Muir

This course offers the previously trained and experienced CDR System Technician an opportunity to acquire advanced skills in the methods of retrieving crash data stored in supported modules by overcoming issues and difficulties caused by damage in collisions.

Being able to troubleshoot in-car issues and problems and work around those problems to enable a CDR System data download while taking into consideration evidentiary issues and personal safety are important to the well-rounded CDR Technician. The class will examine the components, locations and how to identify systems such as: ABS, ESC, throttle-by-wire, electric power steering, remote tire pressure sensors and more. The three day class includes hands-on experience and exercises with vehicles critical components, multi-meters, scantools and other necessary equipment, tools and reference material to provide the student with an opportunity to put into practice the skills learned in the classroom, including examining the vehicle systems, selecting the appropriate method of powering the vehicle and actually collecting data using the methods taught.

At the end of this course, a Technician would be expected to be able to image and preserve data from situations that go beyond a straight forward DLC or benchtop download in a format such that the CDR Data Analyst would be able to use that collected data together with a situationally complete reconstruction. Successful completion of an approved CDR Technician course is a required prerequisite for this course. This goes beyond "there's the DLC, set up the CDR system and turn on the key." This class goes to the heart of "why isn't there power at the DLC?" What can I do if the fuse box is destroyed in the crash?" "How do I make my  own cable' for those not currently available?"

Course topics include:

Basic multi-meter skills and applications

Examining the collision damaged vehicle and selecting alternate methods of accessing the supported modules

Safely "back-powering" the vehicle and module(s)

Direct access to the vehicle wiring system

Making your own cable where an umbilical cable is not available

Resources for and how to read OEM service information including schematic and wiring diagrams

The proper use of "scan tools" for troubleshooting and to detect DTCs

Examination of vehicles to assist the CDR Technician to determine the vehicle has the "if equipped" critical vehicle systems

Class size is limited to ensure adequate hands-on and student-instructor interaction during practical exercises with tools, simulators, project boards and actual cars set up to simulate some of the real world problems the Technician might encounter in the field.
